Home Office Ideas

Posted on May 23, 2022

With the ongoing prevalence of hybrid work, many Americans working from home are realizing the value of investing in a home office. Sure, typing from the couch was fun and working from the kitchen table sufficed for a while, but eventually people need a proper space for work. Interior Motions is here to help.

Where to Begin

You do not have to be an interior designer to create a welcoming and productive space. Here are some things to consider during the design process.

What is the function of the space?

Ask yourself, “what will I be doing in this room?” and then design your office in a way that makes that objective as easy as possible. If you take a lot of video calls throughout the day, create a wall that serves as a beautiful backdrop. If you like to lounge during breaks, include a soft seating area. Your needs are unique to you, and a room should be designed to support them.

What tools do I need?

Of course, a room’s design consists of numerous elements arranged in a cohesive way. Before you can determine the arrangement, you must identify the elements. Do you plan to have a large printer, a storage cabinet, a mini fridge? With an inventory list at hand, the design and organization process becomes much easier.

What mood am I trying to achieve?

Every room evokes a mood, and it is important that the mood aligns with what you hope to accomplish in that room. If your objective is to relax and focus, then you want to create a calming environment with few distractions. One of the best ways to achieve your desired mood is through paint color. This is because color impacts us on a physiological level, “certain hues will make us feel more energetic, or they can be calming. Some even produce feelings of aggression or depression.”

What is my design aesthetic?

The great part about creating a space just for you is that you have the freedom to design it however you like!  Are you drawn to crazy, colorful, patterned wallpaper? Get it! Want a bright yellow couch! Don’t look back! The tricky part is usually figuring out what you like so that you can begin to implement that design aesthetic into your home office. To do that, we recommend getting really clear about your vision for your space

What products should I buy?

Since most working individuals spend approximately 8 hours per day working, it is important to purchase products that support physical and mental wellbeing. Ergonomic products are specifically engineered for comfort and efficiency, making them good long-term investments.

Inspiration

Once you have covered those preliminary questions, you can begin the fun part: creating! What you create is entirely up to you, but here are some different home office ideas.

“Rustic” essentially translates to “simple” or “relating to the countryside.” Thus, rustic design features natural elements, aged items, and a casual setting. This is a great aesthetic if you want your office to feel homey and cozy.
