The Basics of Feng Shui

Posted on May 24, 2021

It is easy to grasp the idea that humans are affected by their environments. However, for four thousand years, participants of Feng Shui have studied the effects of environments on an electromagnetic level and have developed a precise system to help people achieve ultimate harmony with their spaces. Thus, if you want to feel more balanced and more at peace within your home or office, Feng Shui might be right for you. Let’s take a closer look at the basics of Feng Shui.

What Feng Shui is NOT

In order to best understand what Feng Shui is, it is helpful to start with what Feng Shui is NOT. Feng Shui is not a religion, but rather an ancient Chinese philosophy and art form. It emphasizes the fact that everything has a vibrational energy called “Chi.” Thus, when designing a room, people should balance the Chi energy of the space to establish unity with their environment.

Basic Principles

Chi energy can be balanced by incorporating Feng Shui principles into your space such as the Bagua Map and The Five Elements.

The Bagua Map:

“Bagua” in Chinese translates to the “eight areas” of life. Thus, the Bagua map is a theoretical layout of eight different energy centers that are superimposed on every floor plan. Each energy center corresponds to a different aspect of life. It is helpful to pick one to three energy centers that resonate with you the most, and then design your space around them. For example, if you are striving to receive a promotion at work, it might be helpful for you to invest in the career center of your home.

The Five Elements:

The Five elements ––earth, metal, water, wood, and fire–– represent five interrelated phases of life. Different qualities comprise each element, so similar to the Bagua Map, you must choose which elements you want to focus on and then design your space accordingly.

How to achieve it in your space

If you want to align your space with the principles of Feng Shui without making drastic renovations, start by making small changes that will improve the energy flow in your space.

Declutter the space/ remove obstacles

It is important to think about the physical path you take on a daily basis. Is it obstructed by clutter, tight walkways, or overpowering furniture items? If so, then the flow of energy in the space is most likely obstructed as well.

Clean your windows

Windows let in natural light, and natural light is supposed to increase the energy of a room. Thus, make sure that your windows are spotless and letting in that vitamin D.

Make sure that doors can open and close with ease

Doors are said to be the “portals through which you receive opportunities.” If your door cannot open to at least 90 degrees, you may be closing yourself off to the opportunities that life has to offer.

Add plants

Adding plants is beneficial because surrounding yourself with live plants will naturally make your space feel more lively and energetic.

In conclusion, making your space more conducive to Feng Shui does not necessitate an entire overhaul of your space. It simply means reflecting on what is important to you, and ensuring that your space adequately addresses it.
